Fend off a future with
Alzheimer's by having a handful of these for your afternoon snack:
sunflower seeds.
They're
too tasty to be relegated to bird food. And too nutritious! Among other
goodies, these little seeds are loaded with vitamin E, a nutrient that
may help protect against memory-stealing Alzheimer's disease.
The E Advantage
In a study, those who reported getting the highest amount of vitamin E
-- 19 milligrams a day -- were about 25 percent less likely to be

As part of the Town of Laurel’s
makeover of its downtown Laurel Riverview Park, the DNREC Division of
Fish and Wildlife recently completed a new boat ramp and fishing
platform giving boaters and anglers access to Broad Creek, a
freshwater tributary of the Nanticoke River that flows through the
western Sussex County town.
“It’s a great addition to the town,” said Laurel Public Works
Director Woody Vickers, noting that people have been gradually
discovering the new amenities this summer. “I think the boat ramp and
fishing platform will get more and more use, especially in the spring
and fall fishing seasons.”
“This project is a great addition to our state boating access areas,
providing boaters and anglers much-needed access to upper Broad Creek
– possibly the most beautiful section of Delaware’s many scenic tidal
rivers and streams,” said Fisheries Administrator Craig Shirey.
The
WILMAPCO conference room was jam-packed last week with attendees of our
general meeting hoping to gain information about DelDOT's Complete
Streets Policy from DelDOT representatives
Anthony Aglio (DelDOT
Bicycle Coordinator), Bobbi Geier (DelDOT Planning Supervisor) and Mark
Luszcz (DelDOT Traffic Systems Manager).
In
addition to talking at length about DelDOT's new "Complete Streets"
policy, the three also fielded a variety of questions from a large room
full of interested folks about problems on specific roads, design,
infrastructure, maintenance and funding for bicycle and pedestrian
projects. The meeting, which was originally scheduled for 1 hour and 15
minutes, lasted for almost 2 hours.
On Tuesday, July
6th, I had the pleasure of touring B. F. Rich’s manufacturing site in
Newark, Delaware for a second time. As many of you know, I toured the
sight of this 53 year old company earlier this year but I wanted the
opportunity to do so again and to chat with some of the people who
worked there. Two hours and 21 pages of notes later I walked out even
more impressed than I was initially.
I will now attempt
to recount the most pertinent information as it regards consumers. My
first impressions about B. F. Rich were positively reinforced by my
second visit. I had the opportunity to talk to Terry Rex, Darryl
Huber and Chris Lorber for a while before I started the actual tour.
They explained that in 2008 the company made a commitment to roll out
their Green Shield energy efficient products that were at an
affordable premium. The priority was to figure out how to manufacture
windows and doors that exceeded Government Standards on saving energy
while showing a measurable return on their customer’s investment.
They began by looking at all the technology they could incorporate
into their manufacturing process and decided to offer their product
at a reduced cost “to contribute to the right cause which is national
energy conservation".
They have
accomplished that and today the “Green Shield” option package far
exceeds
